The Makaton Core Vocabulary Signs Pocket Book 1 shows you how to communicate with Makaton and sign the words.

Pocket-sized book with line drawings of signs from the Core Vocabulary stages 1-4 and the Additional stage, plus finger spelling. The book is ideal to carry around for use as a reference to help you remember the signs learned at a Beginners’ or Foundation Workshop.

There are 8 stages in Makaton.  This pocket book (number 1) covers the first 4 stages with a few additional extras - so is a great support for those starting out in Makaton use.

Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life. Almost everything we do involves communication; everyday tasks such as learning at school, asking for food and drink, sorting out problems, making friends and having fun. These all rely on our ability to communicate with each other. Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. With Makaton, children and adults can communicate straight away using signs and symbols. Many people then drop the signs or symbols naturally at their own pace, as they develop speech.

Makaton is also useful to learn with babies who can understand words, but are unable to speak.  They can gesture and sign before verbal communication is developed, and the pocket book 1 has all the basic words needed to help you communicate with your baby.
