Original, new/old stock cut edge beret flash from 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Lewis, WA. Probably very late contract (1974) for the unit, right before the unit was inactivated. 1st SFG was later reactivated in 1984, at which time these same beret flashes would have been current. These are fully-embroidered, with a finished, cut edge border, and measure 50mm by 45mm, somewhat smaller in size than the flashes worn by other contemporary SF units. This was a unique distinction of 1st Group flashes and would remain so until the design was upgraded to conform with Department of Heraldry standards in the 1990s. Another interesting detail about the flash is the early coloring. Black border on a dark yellow background. That was the original yellow from when the unit was first activated; however, this color later was changed to "Asian Gold" which is a darker, deeper gold-yellow and is now considered the current and official version of the flash.

These patches, and others, came from the supply room of a sew shop that had been in business in the Fort Lewis area since the Second World War era. That business recently closed down permanently and our shop bought a substantial amount of its vintage stock, including insignia for several older units that were also disbanded.
