A beautiful nineteenth century watercolour, artist, regrettably,  unknown.

It depicts a little girl sitting beneath a tree in sunlit woodland clearing. She is surrounded by a carpet of yellow flowers, primroses I think, and has picked some which are gathered in a her lap.  As we look on she is hanging a garland of the flowers around her neck.
Note the masterly depiction of light and shade around her, the shadows of the tree boughs and the distant sheep grazing in  meadow beyond.

I cannot find a signature.  There is an old label verso but apart from the year 1898 it is illegible other than the initial N top right.
If asked to suggest who might be the painter I would say Benjamin David Sigmund (1857-1947) but that is little more than a guess.

Painted on wove watercolour paper and in excellent original condition. Note is it not laid to card.  Well presented with an ivory coloured card mount with hand painted edging within a gilt wood frame. Both mount and frame are in excellent condition.

Glazed and ready to hang.

Measures 48 x 58cm including the frame, the visible painting only is 23 x 34cm.

Postage £8 to mainland UK, £30 to mainland Europe and £60 to the USA.  For other destinations please contact me for a postage quote.
