Joy Adamson (1910-1970) was a naturalist working in Africa.  When her husband, George Adamson, shot and killed a lioness charging him, he found three cubs that the lioness was protecting,  He brought them home and Joy "adopted" one of them, named Elsa, and raised her before releasing the young lion into the wild rather than placing her in a zoo.  Elsa became the first lioness successfully released back into the wild, the first to have contact with humans after release, and the first released lion to have a litter of cubs.

Joy Adamson then wrote a set of three books (Born Free, Living Free, Forever Free) about her experiences with Elsa; later she became interested in cheetahs and wrote The Spotted Sphinx. The books topped the New York Times best seller list and became classics of their type.  Having read them many years ago, I think they are wonderful books for anyone interested in lions and African fauna.  Offered here are the first two in her series of three books about Elsa.

One of the books (Born Free (1960)) is a first edition.  The other book (Living Free (1961)) is an early printing.
