VERY GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a quality vintage hardback FOLIO SOCIETY EDITION entitled “Persuasion,” by Jane Austen, with an Introduction by Richard Church and numerous wood-engravings by Joan Hassall, including a frontispiece.

It was published by The Folio Society, of London, in 1988.

In Persuasion, Jane Austen’s last work, her inventive satire and ridicule take a milder form, the interest lying in the exquisitely tender love story.  The heroine, Anne Elliott, is twenty-seven, no longer in the first flush of beauty, and unmarried, her previous attachment to the naval officer Frederick Wentworth having been broken off through a misunderstanding.  Indeed, it is a literary tradition that a love affair in Jane Austen’s own life is reflected in Anne Elliott’s.  But while Jane herself was never rewarded by a lasting relationship, her heroine discovers that Captain Wentworth’s affection has survived her initial rejection.

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist and one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English literature.  From 1811 until 1815, with the release of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), she achieved success as a published writer.  She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published after her death in 1817, and began a third, which was eventually entitled Sanditon, but died before completing it.

The book measures 9 inches x 6 inches and has 235 pages (including illustrations).

The book is in good, clean and neat condition for its age.  The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.  There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.  There is no slipcase.

A wonderful, illustrated quality vintage FOLIO SOCIETY EDITION.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World).

These costs are a direct result of:

“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.

Unwinsbooks always obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail.  Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent by courier (customer will be informed).
