The material used for cleaning 5 1/4-inch floppy disk drives, specifically for cleansing the magneto-optical heads, is a compact white disk, gentle, yet non-filamentous. This ensures that it neither damages the disk drive heads nor leaves fragments within their interstices.
The cleaner disk functions like a standard floppy disk, utilizing the rotational movement of the drive and a humidified reading space treated with 3 to 5 drops of white alcohol (ethyl alcohol) or preferably IPA (isopropyl alcohol). This method safely and effectively cleans the read/write heads of 5 1/4-inch disk drives. The disk's surface is made of a soft, non-abrasive compact microfiber designed for magnet-optical device sensors.
The white discs are engineered to endure a minimum of 15 cycles. Unlike older materials that required replacement not only due to dirt but also filament loss, these White Discs can serve for over 15 cycles when dirt accumulation is moderate. Nevertheless, you have the option to replace them using the provided replacement parts or purchase additional ones separately.
Any vintage computer equipped with a 5.25-inch floppy drive reader can employ this cleaning floppy to keep its heads effectively cleaned. This is particularly useful when dealing with old floppies that tend to accumulate dirt and may cause the heads to become easily soiled when accessing them.
