The print offered here is a lovely and evocative etching after a painting by Jean Francois Millet (1814-1875).  The print was published by Georges Petit (1856-1920), one of the two most important publishers of art in Paris in the later 19th century.  Petit took over a gallery from his father in 1877 and a decade or so later began publishing etchings and prints.

Many of the etchings after Millet that Petit published were made by printmakers such as Felix Bracquemond (1833-1914), although this print does not have an attribution to the printmaker.

The only example of this image that I have found online that was published in the form of a print is in the collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It is called "Evening" and was one of a series of four works by Millet called The Four Times of Day.  The Met print, however, was a wood engraving, not an etching, by Jacques-Adrien Lavieille (1830-1875) (see Met No. 26.84.3).

This etching is entitled "La Fin de la Journee" and the publisher's attribution is just below the image.  My best guess is that it was published in the later 1880s.

The dimensions of the etching are:

Height:  6 1/2 Plate Mark; 8 5/8 Sheet;
Width:   7 5/8 Plate Mark; 10 1/8 Sheet;
Frame:  10 inches by 11 1/2 inches.

This print is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off.  Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions".  For example, offered maps are of the period.  Please check my other listings for additional items of interest.  I will combine shipping.
