This volume of Trails Among the Columbine is unusual because it is entirely devoted to the picturesque gateway to the Western Slope of Colorado... Salida and the inter-related operations of the Denver & Rio Grande system. For many years, Salida was one of the railroad's division points along the "Royal Gorge Route" and the original east-west narrow-gauge mainline over Marshall Pass to Gunnison and beyond. And throughout much of the history of Salida, the D&RG maintained extensive locomotive and car repair shops here, as well as a modern hospital.
The lofty mountain region Salida and the Rio Grande railroad system serves is divided by the snowy peaks of the Continental Divide and the colorful Sangre de Cristo Range to the south. The sublime series of high mountains that form the Sawatch and Sangre de Cristo ranges include many peaks 12,000 feet in elevation, with several above the 14,000-foot mark. As a result, the railroads that penetrated this scenic high country found that their operations were rather difficult. When the mining industry declined in the region, the railroads removed much of their trackage over the high mountain passes.
