An 18th century Irish sterling silver sauce boat on three hooved feet with gadroon border. Marked with the pre-1794 harp crowned and Hibernia, indicating Dublin. Maker's mark of MW; possibly Matthew West active in the 1776-1787 period (according to Wyler). Hand engraved 5.10 and SCA along with other marks. No date letter.

4 1/8" to top of handle and 6" from spout to handle. Weight of 166 grams or 5.3 troy ounces.

The best part of this piece (in my opinion) is the engraving of an elephant from someone who apparently saw a mounted elephant head but not the body. In this case the chunky body is hairy like a big dog. Charming.

Condition: the front foot is somewhat pushed in, as pictured.
