From the back cover:

When the 15 families of the community of 12 Mile were forced from their homes in the 1960s, a void was left in their lives as well as in that portion of the Columbia River Valley. The community was situated 12 miles south of Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada. Their picturesque valley was surrounded by snow-capped mountains, waterfalls and mountain lakes.

BC Hydro, a government entity, expropriated their properties to form a water reservoir to supply Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State, USA.

In the process of clearing the valley, it destroyed homes and farms with its bulldozers, fire and water. Only meager rates were paid for the proper-ties, most of which were cleared by the homesteaders' backbreaking methods from 1895 on. BC Hydro then resold the unflooded portions for 20 to 30 times the price they paid the homesteaders.
