Offered here is a lovely engraving of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. by the Massachusetts engraver and artist, John Hudson Elwell (1878-1955).  Elwell is primarily known as one of the finest engravers of bookplates and banknotes, but quite obviously from this example, he also made excellent engravings that were not bookplates.

In this case, Elwell has made a fine depiction of the Lincoln Memorial in winter.  His prints are scarce.  Below the image is written in ink, on the left, "2nd State, Lincoln Memorial", and on the right, "JHE".

Also attached is a typewritten, ink-signed letter (I have seen another example online of an Elwell print with an accompanying letter) in which Elwell makes some interesting comments about the fall-off in demand for bookplates and which reads as follows:

"Dear Mrs. Lymans ;

                  I am delighted with your personal palte [sic, ?plate].  It is not the cost of a thing that makes it valuable but the thought put into it. Your helpful remarks of my work are very cheering especially in these days where book plates are nevery [sic] considered a necessity but as something to appease a whim and granted to the artist to do along more or less charitable lines.  The print Lincoln Memorial is a plate I have just finished and is one of my first working proofs copies of this together with my ships may be had in your city at the Adler Engraving Shop on G. Street.

                 With every good wish to you I am
                             Very truly yours
                             John H. Elwell [ink signature]
                             30 Bromfield Street Boston
                   March 26, 1935"

This print is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off.  Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions".  For example, offered maps are of the period.  Please check my other listings for additional items of interest.  I will combine shipping.
