GOOD CONDITION

This sale is for a large size VICTORIAN hardback edition entitled “Under the Window,” subtitled “Pictures & Rhymes for Children,” by Kate Greenaway, (1846-1901) with numerous illustrations in COLOUR by Kate Greenaway engraved and printed by Edmund Evans, including illustrated half-title, title and contents pages and 4 frontispieces.

It was published by Frederick Warne and Co., of London and New York, and is undated, looks late Victorian.

Under the Window: Pictures & Rhymes for Children (1879) was Kate Greenaway's first children's picture book, composed of her own verses and illustrations.   The first edition of 20,000 copies was printed by Edmund Evans and published by Routledge and was available in stores in October 1879 ready for Christmas.  This toy book was a commercial success, selling out before the printer could do a reprint.  This edition, by the same printer but published by Frederick Warne looks a similar age circa 1880s (later Warne reprints had gold colours on the cover) so is an early edition.

The book measures 9.5 inches x 7.5 inches and has 64 pages (including illustrations). 

The book is in good used but neat condition for its age, with wear/scuffs to the original hardback cover, with a little foxing near the covers. There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is a little fragile but is still good with no loose or missing pages.  There is no dust-jacket.

Unwinsbooks have held down shipping prices from 2013-2020 in spite of small increases in postage costs.  However, Royal Mail Prices dramatically changed on 1 July 2020, as a result of exceptional cost increases outside of their control, so we are reluctantly having to pass on pricing increases for parcels being sent overseas (primarily USA, New Zealand, Australia and the Rest of the World). 

These costs are a direct result of: 

• An increase of more than 100% in the fees the US Postal Service (USPS) charges for the delivery of international mail.

• Securing air freight at inflated market costs due to a 95% reduction in air passenger flights globally. This has not affected domestic or postage within the EU.

“Royal Mail, always aim to deliver the best value international services. We fully recognise that these changes are significant. This was a decision we reluctantly took but is necessary in view of the increased costs borne by Royal Mail.”

If the Royal Mail reduce their charges in the future (in particular what they term “Temporary Air Carrier Supplement Pricing”) unwinsbooks will reduce the international costs accordingly.

Unwinsbooks always obtain a proof of postage receipt from the Royal Mail.  Packages over Royal Mail size rules may be sent by courier (customer will be informed).
