Jacques-Charles Bar (1740-1811) was a French artist and printmaker. Not much is known about him except that, after the French Revolution, he changed his name to Jacques-Charles Rabelli-Bar. Curious.
This hand colored engraving is from his multi-volume work from the 1780s entitled "Recueil de tout les costumes des ordres religieux et militaires avec un abrégé historique et chronologique." This particular print shows a monk's garb from a religious order in some past time. The engraving is on a lovely large piece of laid paper with the watermark of a Dutch paper company that began operations in 1621, "D&C Blauw". Bar's name is etched in the slab on which the monk is standing along with the date which appears to be 1783.
This print is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions". Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping.
