The print offered here is a large and fascinating hand-colored aquatint by Philibert Debucourt (1755-1832) after the French artist Carle Vernet (1758-1836).

In this image, which is one of a series that depicts life in the streets of Paris in the years shortly after the French Revolution (from "Collection des costumes destines diapers nature" published individually and not in a book by Charles Bance), a worker is lighting a clay pipe while a vendor selling bread and wine tends to a fire between her feet.  She may have provided the ember that is being used to light the pipe.

This aquatint is in the online collection of the British Museum at No. 1982,U.1726.

Another print in this series is available among my listings.

This print is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off.  Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions".  For example, offered maps are of the period.  Please check my other listings for additional items of interest.  I will combine shipping.
