Relying on feedback from U.S. soldiers and industry, and replicating the layering systems utilized by mountaineering professionals the GEN III L7 ECWCS gear was designed to provide comfort and protection for soldiers in extreme and moderate cold conditions for extended periods of time. It is, and was intended to allow for stealth and agility in extreme cold weather tactical operations and combat. The design of the ECWCS trouser makes it ideal for moderate and extreme cold weather hunting, mountaineering, snow shoeing, snow shoveling, survival situations and training, domestic activities, and etc.
This item is frequently referred as being designed for static operations and while it performs optimally in those conditions it was also specifically designed to allow for tactical operations and physical activity. The risk of overheating as a result of high thermal efficiency of this item due to physical activity is mitigated by the full length zippers on the legs and proper layering techniques and preparation in the overall system.
Please Note: The trousers for sale here as a stand alone component of the GEN III L7 ECWCS do not provide the full protection of the complete ECWCS system which was designed to provide adequate environmental protection to temperatures as cold as -60 Fahrenheit. However, in my opinion, as a stand alone item that is integrated into any extreme cold weather gear system, or the ECWCS itself, the design and characteristics of the trousers should be considered best in class in comparison to other extreme cold weather gear.
