The 1920 edition of Funk & Wagnall's dictionary defined the verb "houdinize" as "to release or extricate oneself from (confinement, bonds, or the like), as by wriggling out." 1920 also saw Houdini turn his energies toward debunking psychics and mediums in order to show how they were taking advantage of the bereaved. Houdini's training in magic allowed him to expose frauds who had successfully fooled many scientists and academics.
