Vintage Silver Celtic Shield Plaid Brooch

A beautiful vintage Celtic shield plaid brooch; essentially two designs by renowned Iona silversmith, Alexander Ritchie. Ritchie's original design featured Celtic knotwork to the central boss but the Viking long boat is also from a Ritchie Brooch. Brooch measures approx 36mm in diameter and is secured with a tube hinge pin and open c clasp. Fully hallmarked to the reverse indicating it was assayed for silver at Chester in 1946 by Shipton & Co. In excellent unpolished condition retaining a wonderful aged patina and with minimal signs of wear commensurate with age.
