Melville F. Stark (1903 - 1987): A leading figure in eastern Pennsylvania, was a dedicated plein-air painter and teacher, deeply committed to enriching Allentown's cultural life alongside his close friend Walter Baum. Stark's influence extended to Rockport, Massachusetts, and later the Longboat Key Art Center in Florida. He embraced impressionist landscape painting, teaching at institutions like the Kline-Baum Art School, Cedar Crest, and Muhlenberg Colleges. His reputation waned during the 1960s as modernist movements gained favor. Born in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, Stark shifted from a Physical Education degree to a lifelong passion for art, studying at various institutions and finding inspiration in artists like Cullen Yates and Walter Baum. He returned to Allentown in 1926 and became a teacher at the Baum School of Art. Beyond his art career, Stark actively promoted the Allentown Art Museum, serving as trustee and director, leaving a lasting impact on the local cultural scene.
