DESCRIPTION:
Nature gives man a lot of useful plants. One of them is jiaogulan or five–leaved gynostemma. In China, the herbaceous vine is called the "herb of immortality". It acts on the body as a powerful antioxidant, heals and prolongs life. Jiaogulan is superior to ginseng in terms of the number of active ingredients. The exotic plant can be grown at home, planted in the open ground in the southern regions.
Gynostemma pentaphyllum belongs to the pumpkin family. The perennial vine grows up to 8 m. At home, the shoots become woody. In temperate latitudes with winter frosts, the liana grows as a perennial plant, renewing shoots in spring. Climbing stems are equipped with antennae. The leaves are green petiolate palmately compound. Their length is 8 cm, width is 3 cm. They consist of 5 separate lanceolate leaflets. The edges of the plate are finely toothed. In autumn, the color of the leaves changes to red.
The gynostemma blooms from July to August. The flowers are unisexual, small, white or greenish in color. The shape of the corolla is tubular with dissected lobes. Inflorescences are racemose panicles up to 15 cm long. The fruits are round black berries with two or three seeds. In late autumn, the leaves fall off, the ground part dies off until spring. During the growing season, shoots and leaves can be periodically cut off to make herbal teas.
