Alfred Watkins, born in Hereford, inventedthe Bee Meter, which was patented in April 1890. This was the first light meterto measure the relative intensity of light through Watkins' invention of theactinometer and it allowed a numerical value to be assigned to light. The BeeMeter was a pocket calculator for determining exposure, so-called because itwas small and highly efficient. It was manufactured in Hereford. Alfred Watkinswas an eminent photographer and a keen beekeeper, combining both to producesome wonderful photographs of bees and beekeeping around the beginning of thelast century. This meter is in very good condition for its age and includes theoriginal box, complete with original manual.
