Gudok is a bowed instrument from Novgorod, dated on IX-XII century. Many of these were found during excavations in Eastern Europe, especially Russia. However bowed lyres like this were found also in other regions, including Hedeby (Haithabu), which was an important Viking settlement. In different cultures it had a different shape and name: Byzantine lira, Gadulka, Lirica, but the technique of playing remained the same. It belongs to a family of medieval bowed lyres/fiddles.
