Anita
Polacca was a daughter of Violet Huma and she lived at the Village of Sichomovi
on First Mesa (Arizona). She was active as a potter for about 60 years starting
in 1940. Her mother was also a renown Hopi potter, Violet Huma, living in the
same village her entire life. She was active as a potter for about 50 years
starting in the 1930s.
The
design is a bold rendition of a Sikyatki style avian form – her favorite design
inspiration, first brought back to life by Nampeyo of Hana (it’s an interesting
story of how Nampeyo’s husband brought back some ancient pottery shards which
served as the guiding design elements of Sikyatki). Violet was a contemporary
of Nampeyo, both being of First Mesa – separated at the time from the potters
of the other two Mesas by dialects. And,
of course, today, the Polacca family has many fine, fine potters.
Both
Violet and Anita made many, many pots each, and as such they are widely collected.
