THIS LISTING FEATURES A VERY FINE DIVIDED SILVER PLATED BOX MADE BY ELKINGTON & Co. I PHOTOGRAPHED IT ON BOTH A DARK AND LIGHT BACKGROUND IN ORDER TO PROVIDE THE BEST IMPRESSION. THE EXTERIOR WAS CHASED ~ ENGRAVED WITH FANCY SCROLL WORK ON ALL SIDES EXCEPT THE BOTTOM AND THE LID INCLUDES A SPLENDID FOX PORTRAIT. A KNOWLEDGABLE FRIEND SUGGESTED THAT THIS IS A “COAT OF ARMS.”

In heraldry terms the fox was a common symbol for the Devil during the middle ages. This fox is a symbol of the Devil tempting man’ therefore it may be a reminder to the bearer to stay alert and resist temptation. The fox was also used to symbolize the struggle of the ordinary common folk against the feudal baron. In Heraldry it is therefore a symbol of one who will use all his shrewdness, sagacity, wit or wisdom for his own defense.
THIS 2-PART BOX IS VERY WELL CONSTRUCTED WITH A STURDY DIVIDER AND A WELL HINGED LID SO IT IS VERY STRUCTURALLY SOUND. THE BOTTOM HAS 3 HALL MARKS ENGRAVED SIDEWAYS ALONG ONE SHORT END. LEFT TO RIGHT THEY ARE AN UNDECIPHERED SYMBOL AND E & Co AND THE LETTER L. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THIS PARTICULAR MARK WAS USED IN 1850. SO THIS BOX CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS VICTORIAN. THE NUMBERS 2018 ARE ENGRAVED IN THE CENTER SO THIS IS LIKELY A STYLE NUMBER. THIS BOX FEELS REALLY GREAT IN THE HANDS AND DISPLAYS BEAUTIFULLY. THE MEASUREMENTS:
Approximately 4 5/8" left to right, 3" front to back, 2 3/4" deep inside and 3 1/2" high. Each section is 2 1/8" x 3". The weight is just about 12.8 oz. The completed carton will ship USPS Priority insured at the 2 pound rate.
THE CONDITION:
Considering that this is a pre-enjoyed antique item, the overall condition is very good to excellent depending on your point of view. ●●●Please allow the photos to guide you as they are the lion’s share of this description.●●● This is what I see to describe: although I gently polished the silver, some tarnish remains. I did not do much polishing on the interior. The bottom shows friction rubbing around the perimeter and there are lots of scratches. ●●●I hope I have not missed anything. If I did, it was surely minor and 100% unintentional.●●● Just about 99% of the collectibles I offer are vintage/pre-owned and may show a small amount of use. I often heighten the contrast in my pictures to bring out all the details. The color you see may be slightly brighter or different than it actually is. Please inquire if you are concerned.
