COVER: Hey, Rockers! Show us your parents!

ON THE COVER: Singer-songwriter Alicia Keys with her mother and inspiration, Terri Augello, relaxing at Mom's new Manhattan home. Photograph by Sage Sohier.

HARMONY AT HOME: TAKE TWO: Sunday night, watching the Grammys, you'll sorely see a few of the musicians featured in our cover story, "The Kids Are Alright (and the Parents Ain't Bad. Either)," upon the podium. Like all rock stars, they may say something slightly incoherent or just plain odd. But you can bet they'll thank Mom and Dad. Our portraits of rockers and their parents, taken by Sage Sohier and Joao Canziani, reprise a 1971 LIFE cover story. For that piece, photographer John Olson shot, among others, the Jackson 5, Grace Slick, and David Crosby in their early years. His photos, like those in this issue, were accompanied by strikingly honest commentary: "I had hoped he would follow something like what I had done," Francis Zapper (-who was, variously, a teacher, a meteorologist, and a mathematician) said of his pop star son. Frank, "but later I realized that this was not his bag.".
Elton John with his mother and stepfather in London.
The Zappas in L.A.
Eric Clapton and his grandmum in Surrey, England.
