Offered here is a charming ink drawing by the storied Spanish artist, Josep Bartoli (1910-1995).  Bartoli, born in Barcelona, fought in the Spanish Civil War with a unit of the Catalan Communist Party.  He was interned in a French camp and was to be transported to the concentration camp at Dachau but escaped and traveled to Mexico, via Morocco. In 1946 Bartoli moved to the United States, working as an illustrator and and screenwriter until being blacklisted during the travesty called the McCarthy period.  He died in New York City in 1995.  Perhaps one of the most well-known pieces of information about Bartoli is that he is reputed to have been the artist Frida Kahlo's final love.

Bartoli's life is the subject of an award-winning film, "Josep", by the French cartoonist Aurel.

The subject of this undated drawing is the famous tourist site in Strasbourg, France, Les Ponts Couverts.  I have included a couple of photographs of the Strasbourg site.  In the lower left corner of the sheet, partially obscured by the tape, are the words in pencil, "Strasbourg Les Couverts".  The piece is signed in ink, "Bartoli", in the lower right corner.

The dimensions of the sheet are 10 1/4 inches in height by 14 1/4 inches in width.
