PICTURE OF THE WEEK: This girl strolling through a field of bricks on a sunny day seems carefree. But when thousands of Afghan refugee children on the outskirts of Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, aren't playing among the bricks, they're at work in the kilns. Many of their families, after fleeing war in the 1980s and '90s, are trying to repay loans from the factory owners so they can return to their homeland. Since 2002, nearly 3 million Afghans have been repatriated from Pakistan, but 1.1 million remain. For those in Peshawar, home is only 30 miles away--a powerful magnet for adults and a dream for their children. PHOTOGRAPH BY VERONIQUE DE VIGUERIE.

DEPARTMENTS:
Weekend Life: Sheryl Crow on her new album and her new fiancé; Cinderella looks better than ever on DVD; scenic roads less traveled for leaf-lovers. Plus: Freddie Prinze Jr. wears a chef's hat--and this time he isn't acting.
Picture Puzzle: Spy the differences between these photos.
