POPPY - PAPAVER SOMNIFERUM PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Life Cycle-Annual planting time: Fall and Spring.
Plant poppy seeds in fall or spring after frost. Most poppies require a period of stratification (freezing them for 2-3 weeks). Select a sunny spot with well draining, sandy type soil. Scatter seeds and very gently rake to distribute. Cover with no more than 1/16" of soil. Mist the soil whenever it appears dry. Germination occurs in 7-10 days. Reduce frequency of irrigation once poppies reach 2-3” high as they do not like damp growing conditions. Do not plant in really hot weather. These seeds DO NOT like to germinate in Mid-Summer like weather, the best planting times being Fall-thru-late Spring. DO NOT attempt to transplant unless poppies are in a coco-peat “Jiffy” pot.
