ANTIQUE VICTORIAN/EDWARDIAN ART NOUVEAU, HEAVYNICKEL SILVER SUGAR DISH

Antique, Victorian-Edwardian, Art Nouveau era, (1890-1910), heavy,E.P.N.S, (electroplated nickel silver) sugar dish, complete with hand-made cutglass dish and sugar spoon. This sugar dish is a rectangular basket shape, openfretwork, with a domed shape lid, a ball shape lifting knob, a handle which hasa receptacle for the spoon and sits on four ball feet. The heavy hand-made cutglass dish has a sunburst design. The fretwork is a typical Art Nouveau style.

 Art Nouveau or "New Art") is aninternational style of art, architecture, and appliedart,especially the decorative arts. It was popular between 1890 and1910 during the Belle Époque period and was a reaction against the academicart, eclecticism and historicism of 19th century architecture anddecoration. It was often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curvesof plants and flowers Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense ofdynamism and movement, often given by asymmetry or whiplash lines.

This sugar dish is 125 mm., long, and 95 mm., wide, 85 mm., high, plushandle which is 90 mm. The total weight 659 grams. The weight of the metalparts is 120 grams and the spoon weighs 16 grams.

The maker is unknown however the sugar spoon which appearsto be part of the set is stamped C.W.S., (Co-operativeWholesale Society, Manchester), The date is researched as 1890-1910. The dateand age is not guaranteed.

Founded in 1863, it produced the CWS Brandgoods for co-operative societies throughout the UK including food, furniture,clothing, and household products. In 2001 the name was changed to TheCo-operative Group.

Rich households bought their white sugar in tall, conicalloaves, from which pieces were broken off with special iron sugar-cutters/nipsat home. Other smaller households bought pieces of the sugar loaf and wouldfurther brake into smaller pieces at home with a sugar hammer. Sugar disheswere put on the table and would contain these smaller pieces//lumps of sugar.

This Victorian- Edwardian antique, nickel silver sugar dishwas pre-owned, in good condition, does have very minor plate chipping on lid,but this does not detract the appearance. It does not have any other plateloss, dents, deep scratches, or gouges. It does have scratches commensuratewith age, usage & wear. The hand-made glass dish does not have anychipping. Seller’s ref.
