MANHATTAN (1932)

She was built by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, New Jersey for the United States Line as a 24,289 GT ship with dimensions of 668'x86'. Twin-screw, 21 knots, steam turbines two masts and two funnels. Launched on Dec. 5, 1931.

Maiden voyage New York-Plymouth-Hamburg- August 10, 1932. Passenger accommodations for 1,200.

During WW II became the WAKEFIELD in 1941 for the U.S. Government. Rebuilt in 1942 after suffering damage and re-commissioned as a troopship in April 1944.

Since WW II has remained under government ownership, laid up in the reserve fleet.
