*****For centuries, gentlemen have carried walking sticks as a symbol of their social standing. By the 18th century, the custom of presenting a person with a finely crafted cane to commemorate an event or achievement had become widely practiced. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, presentation canes and walking sticks were often adorned with intricately designed gold handles with fanciful monograms and/or insignias, and worn as a token of respect and congratulations. Some were made to record important accomplishments of an individual’s life or experiences, or to denote a person’s company, rank, and military campaigns.
