It had been more than a year since he drove to Victory Lane, but Mark Martin took control of the Hardee’s 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway to take the checkers in the 1991 NASCAR Cup Series season finale. Racing for team owner Jack Roush, Martin powered his No. 6 Folgers Coffee Ford to the front for 190 laps, beating Ernie Irvan to the line by more than 10 seconds. “Some of the guys ran with us for a while, but they weren’t able to keep it up,” Martin told the press after the race.
