Pelagodoxa mesocarpa. This beautiful palm from Vanuatu Fiji can be distinguished from Pelagodoxa henryana by its longer, narrower leaf with an orange midrib and smaller seed. Fruits can be up to 6 cm in diameter and have an orangish, fragrant pulp with an ovoid seed, henryana seed has green pulp and no scent even when ripe. The distinct differences between the two species leaves when young and their seeds are clearly shown in the attached photos. The leaves are large, undivided, and may extend to 4 m long and to about 1 m wide. The upper surface is green and the lower surface has a distinctive silvery, white colouration. Pelagodoxa mesocarpa is an extremely beautiful, somewhat difficult palm to germinate, it is adapted to the humid tropical climates, It's elegant foliage and small stature make it suitable for a smaller landscapes. People who live in colder climates can still enjoy the palms as potted plants. Seed is not often available from cultivated plants, for this reason, it has been an expensive item, normally reserved for collectors. It has a fibrous root system and benefits from deep organic, soils that are fertile, as long as they are well drained. Likes a half-shaded, sheltered position. Give some sun as with most tropical palms. Seeds take 6 to 8 months to germinate and can be erratic with poor germination rates, which is another reason they are not offered for sale often. It prefers adequate moisture to look its best. Don't let sit in water though. Indoor, potted palms should not be over-watered.

Plant for sale is a well grown, established seedling "similar" to the one shown in the photo in front of timber door, the other photo's are examples of adult plants and a seed, for reference and comparison purposes only.
