Black iron oxide is a common colourant in ceramics. It is a soft and very fine powder made by grinding ore material or heat processing ferrous/ferric sulphate or ferric hydroxide. 

During firing the iron decomposes and produces similar colours in glazes and clay bodies.

Black iron oxide can also be used to colour cement and concrete.

Notes on use of Black Iron Oxide

Though not considered toxic, this product is a strong pigment in powder form and as such:

Avoid contact with skin if possible

Wash hands after use

Avoid the generation of dust

Keep away from food / drink and do not eat or drink when using the material

Use good workshop hygiene practices
