This book is an account of the missions I flew over North Vietnam in an F105 fighter-bomber during the nine-month period of 23 October 1966 to 15 June 1967. It is based on a personal combat diary and notes that I kept during my tour of duty with the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing at Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. I also researched training records, aircraft manuals, official orders, target photos, gun-camera film, checklists, maps, and newspaper articles in order to make this book as factual   realistic as possible.
My story is presented from the perspective of a line fighter pilot and builds gradually to develop the reader's understanding of the airplane and mission so that ultimately we go to Hanoi together in the cockpit of an F105 to face the gunner's fire and experience the riveting danger of combat. The period of 1966-67 was a time of fierce aerial struggle over North Vietnam. The strategy of the United States was to bring political pressure to bear on the outcome of the war in Southeast Asia by conducting air strikes against targets in North Vietnam. These strikes, known as Operation Rolling Thunder, were carried out by Air Force aircraft stationed in Thailand and South Vietnam and by Navy aircraft stationed

In 100 Missions North, Ken Bell recounts the harrowing sorties that he and his fellow U.S. Air Force pilots made while flying F-105 Thunderchiefsthe famous "Thud"in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. At this time, Thud pilots faced a 50 percent loss rate. What was it like to face these odds day after day? We learn that men sustained by faith in each other and joined by the unique bonds of combat can overcome anxiety, fear, and even terror to achieve common goals.
