COMPLETE 1940 KING GEORGE VI SET ON LOCAL COVER TO AUBREY YOUNG
FINE COVER - SCARCE & MOST EXCEPTIONAL CACHET
Sc.#1-8, S.G. 1-8
----------------------------------------------
CONDITION: VERY FINE 1949 COVER with minor marks on the reverse side, but still fine and very clean, and which do not detract from this excellent and attractive cover. There are NO rips, tears, wrinkles, or age marks. The neat and complete postmarks (Kitching type 2.3) are lightly applied, dated 26 April 1949.
CACHET: EXCEPTIONAL !! THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THIS SCARCE CACHET SEEN IN MANY YEARS !!
H.M.S. BOUNTY, 1789 / "PITCAIRN ISLAND" / (ship) / HANDS ACROSS THE SEA / (clasped hands) rubber stamp cachet 75 x 76mm (Kitching 9.7). This is a perfectly clear and complete cachet, with four complete lines of the rectangle. The last recorded use of this cachet was 12 September 1952, more than 70 years ago!
The cachet was first seen on a 22 August 1940 cover, and owing to lack of mail opportunities due to World War II (very few ships called), it was sparingly used, hence this very fine impression. This was the first Pitcairn cachet to use the phrase "Hands across the Sea" and the 'Clasped Hands' image in a rubber stamp.
GRANT AUBREY YOUNG (b. 16 Oct. 1909), the addressee, was the great, great, grandson of Edward (Ned) Young, an officer aboard "Bounty", and co-conspirator in the Mutiny with Fletcher Christian.
