On August 29, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Defenders of Ukraine. This date was established to honor the memory of soldiers and members of volunteer groups who gave their lives for their country, as a reminder of one of the bloodiest events of the Russian-Ukrainian war in the east of the country - the Ilovaisk tragedy. The "green corridor" that was deadly for our defenders then ran through fields of sunflowers, so the sunflower became the symbol of the Day of Remembrance of the Fallen Defenders of Ukraine. Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, caused a new wave of heroism, resilience of Ukraine's defenders and, unfortunately, painful losses.  Our memory of them is bright, our gratitude to them is boundless, and our respect is the highest. We remember and will remember! The sketch for the postage stamp dedicated to the Memorial Day is based on the work of Honored Artist of Ukraine Oleh Shupliak "Sorrow" (2016).
