This interesting title chronicles the genesis of a significant art collection and the Florentine-style villa in Sarasota where it is housed. The proprietor of the Ringling Brothers-Barnum & Bailey Circus, John Ringling (1866-1936) was "the King of the Big Top" and a multimillionaire to boot. With his wife, Mabel, he developed a fervent interest in accumulating European works of art that reflected their eclectic tastes. Despite his tent-show roots, Ringling was no rube or dilettante, and in a few short years he assembled the largest grouping of Italian Baroque paintings in the United States. Among many other treasures, the Ringling Museum (now the State Art Museum of Florida) boasts an elaborately symbolic Lucas Cranach panel, one of Franz Hals's most important portraits, and Thomas Gainsborough's largest canvas.
