Sidney Woodward-Smith (1904-1972)

Born 23rd November 1904 in the "Nightingale Lying-in Home", in the county of Derby, in the heart of England, came to Australia with his family in 1920

Christened as John Sidney Smith, and early in his career, as an artist in Australia, took his mother's Maiden Name Woodward to Read John Sidney Woodeard-Smith, mainly known as Sidney Woodward-Smith

Sidney Woodward-Smith studied at the famous Julian Ashton School of Art in Sydney, Worked as Commercial Artist before his appointment at the University of Sydney to inaugurate a Department of Medical Illustration. Subsequently became honorary consultant to the Department of Medical Illustration at St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney

Sidney Woodward-Smith had his first exhibition with The Australian Art Society's Annual exhibition in 1928, widely report in the Sydney Morning Herald and Evening News, here is the art critics's Comment: Mr. Woodward-Smith excels in clear-cut views of hills and Sky, glowing with colour of the utmost depth and purity

In 1929, His Oil Painting "The Gasometers" been selected for an important publication "Australian Landscape Painters of Today", Art in Australia Special Edition publication

He exhibited again in a specail exhibition in 1930 with Elioth Gruner, Will Ashton, Douglas Dundas, Robert Johnson, Julian Ashton, George Bell, Lloyd Rees, Lionel Lindsay etc.

In 1934 he held his first one-man show at Grosvenor Gallery and in 1968 held his last one-man exhibition at the Macquarie Galleries
