It is a view of Rouen harbour, with tall sailing ships moored at the quay, smaller boats sailing back and forth and figures standing around the French flag in the foreground.

Signed lower left 'B Loriot' with the artist's distinctive little bird character.  It is also signed on the back of the canvas and inscribed with the title 'Les Voiles de la Liberte at Rouen' (The Sails of Freedom at Rouen).

Not dated, estimated to be 1960s/70s.

Painted on canvas and in excellent condition. Presented in very complementary antiqued gilt wood frame with an inner inset of natural coloured linen type fabric.  One of two very small signs of age on the frame but generally in very good condition.

Measures 35.5 x 40.5cm including the frame, the painting only is 22.5 x 27.5cm.

Bernard Loriot was a painter born in Honfleur.  He was self taught, inspired by seeing some of the well known French artists who worked around the old Honfleur basin.
His father died when he was just 9 and he  had to help his mother provide for the family so was unable to pursue his artistic interest for some time.   This continued when he volunteered to serve in the military during the Liberation of France, serving in France and also in Austria. Returning home in 1945 he married a year later and it was not until 1950 after suffering an accident which immobilised him for several months that he had time to resume his artwork, encouraged by his doctor who was himself an amateur artist.  Just a year later his work was accepted for exhbition at the Paris Salon and in 1954 he was won the first of many many awards. His first solo exhibition took place in 1956 and in 1958 he opened a studio/gallery in Honfleur with another artist, becoming a full time professional painter.
Loriot's first international show took place in Belgium in 1973 and was followed by others in Italy and Germany.  He also sold work in Japan, the USA and the UK.
There are many auction records for his work with prices for oils up to £4000, up to £800 for similar sized paintings.
