Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Hosoban Urushie - (Important Art Object) The vertical inscription below the round cartouche of this righthand sheet of a triptych identifies the young actor as Sanogawa Mangiku and accords him the modest rating of Jo-Jo-Hanshiro-Kichi. Mangiku came from a samurai family of Himeji, near present-day Kobe, and made his debut on the Kabuki stage at the age of sixteen. He turned from playing young mens roles to female impersonations, finally advancing to the high rating of Hanshiro-Goku-Jo-Jo-Kichi. Mangiku won fame not only for his handsome looks but also as an accomplished player of women samurai and aragoto, or heroic roles. After about 1740, troubled by rheumatism of the legs, he specialized in roles depending mainly on dialogue. He died in 1746 at the age of fifty-eight.
