Tadelloses Exemplar. / Perfect copy. - Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) was one of America's first great modernists. Throughout his early career in the 1920s and 1930s, his quest for the meaning and the function of art took him around the world. From Buckminster Fuller's New York to Brancusi's stonecutting shop in Paris, Noguchi immersed himself in the art world of the early thirties. In the latter half of the decade, he dedicated his efforts to self-discovery, traveling through Japan, China, and later Mexico for extended periods of time. In 1937 he returned to the United States, only to find his identity further confused by the onset of the war with Japan and the establishment of internment camps for Japanese-Americans. His utopian tendencies (and perhaps the years of friendship with Fuller) led him to approach the camps as landscapes. He voluntarily entered the camp in Poston, Arizona, in the hope of improving the environment through design. After six months, using a weekend pass, he left the camp, never to return.
