For years, biographies of the Dean were bedevilled by legends of his madness and by romantic mysteries surrounding his relationship with Stella and Vanessa. Post-war scholarship, however, has swept all this away, and has provided a factual basis for a much clearer understanding of both his life and work. Dr Nokes presents a portrait of Swift in his multifarious roles as satirist, politician, churchman, and friend. In particular, he seeks to re-establish a proper balance between Swift’s public and private lives. Swift’s works are full of warnings for those who adopt a middle course; yet he also insists that it is the only way to avoid shipwreck on the opposing rocks of pedantry and populism. Throughout his life he saw specialization as a first dangerous step towards that distorted simplification of complex human phenomena which characterizes all factions and fanatics. This critical biography therefore adopts a middle course between, on the one hand, those partial and lopsided views that often result from giving undue prominence to a particular theme or genre, and, on the other hand, the broad sweeps of the generalizing critic which run the risk of missing altogether the teasing particularity of Swift’s ironies.
