Happily, the House of Tillander with its long tradition of superb work, is still functioning with conspicious success and continues to adhere to the fundamental tenets of its calling by encouraging and training youngsters in the technical secrets of their chosen craft. The whole enterprise quite clearly maintains a mind and flavour of its own and represents a rare phenomenon in today's troubled world. There is an illuminating parallel to be drawn between the initial success with which Fabergé's products were greeted when they were first introduced to an astonished and delighted Russian aristocracy and the enthusiasm demonstrated by serious collectors today. The gold, enamel and gem-set compositions designed by the Petersburg Master and his artists were offered to these Russians at a time when they were particularly susceptible to just such an injection of glamour and novelty - they were a bored and disenchanted society.
