Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - PETER FINCH had a large and lusty appetite for life, and when he died suddenly on January 14,1977, he was atop a new peak of success that subsequently brought him a posthumous Oscar. Like a shooting star he went out with a blinding flash of light. Born in England, almost certainly an illegitimate son, he was spirited away to France while still a baby and into the care of his avant-garde grandmother, and when she later took off for India, Peter, still a small boy, went with her. There he learnt meditation and the art of begging. Another jump, and he landed in Australia for the raw experiences of his early life, growing up during the Great Depression as an irrepressible and amusing youth, turning his hand at anything to survive - court reporter, artist's model, straight man in vaudeville, waiter -before becoming an actor. Once established he caught the eye of Sir Laurence Olivier, who encouraged him to leave Australia for London. So began a brilliant but erratic career, first in the theatre and then in films. Sunday Bloody Sunday, Far from the Madding Crowd, The Pumpkin Eater, Girl with Green Eyes are just some of the films he will always be remembered for. Best Actor Award came from the British Film Academy for his part as Johnnie Byrne, MP, in No Love for Johnnie, and for his part as the television producer Howard Beale in Network, he was awarded the American Academy Award for Best Actor - a part which also brought both the Hollywood Golden Globe Award and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for Best Actor. But who was Peter Finch? A chameleon who adapted to varying roles without ever carrying the conviction of a great star? Or a thrice-married misunderstood genius whose dedication to a role was totally underestimated by the film moguls and Hollywood entrepreneurs who managed, or rather mismanaged, his career? Whichever interpretation is put on it, his life is full of colourful stories about his charm, his unpleasantness, his drinking, and his appetite for women that led him into affairs, sometimes disastrous, with actresses like Kay Kendall and Vivien Leigh. The author, a fellow actor and a personal friend of Finch's for over thirty years, manages to tease out fact from legend and dissects, with the skill born of intimate knowledge of the world Peter Finch worked and loved and struggled in, the heart and mind of a man torn between being an artist and becoming a Hollywood star. A gallery of famous names were interviewed to put together this biography of quite extraordinary dimension. With its roguish hero the life of Peter Finch is a picaresque and tragic story covering a unique period in movie history that makes it not only about a much loved personality but an unforgettable era.
