Volodymyr I Svyatoslavich (960/963 - July 15, 1015) was the Grand Duke of Kyiv (979–1015), Prince of Novgorod (970–988). Baptist of Russia. A representative of the Varangian Rurik dynasty. The youngest (illegitimate) son of Prince Svyatoslav Ihorovych of Kyiv from the locksmith Malusha (alleged daughter of Prince Mal of Drevlya). Grandson of the Kiev princess Olga, father of the Kiev prince Yaroslav the Wise. The younger brother and successor of Prince Yaropolk Svyatoslavych of Kyiv. Seized the Kiev throne after a personal struggle with his brother (977–979). He annexed the lands of the Vyatichi (982), the Yatvyagi (983), the Radimichi (984), and the White Croats (981) to Kyivan Rus. He fought against the Bulgarians (985), Greeks (988), Armenians (1000), Poles (1001), Pechenegs (996, 1015). Baptized Rus in 988. He established the Kyiv Metropolitanate of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. He expanded the boundaries of the capital Kyiv, built the Tithe Church (996). He was the first of the Russian princes to start minting his own gold coin. Volodymyr (988) and other cities were founded. He used the personal sign "trident", which became the coat of arms of Ukraine in the 20th century. He died in the Berestovsky Palace outside Kyiv. Canonized by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches as an Equal-to-the-Apostles saint. Founder of the Volodymyrovych dynasty. National hero of Ukraine. Nicknames — Great, Saint, Baptist, Red Sun, etc.
