In this activity children will focus on building (consonant-vowel-consonant) words with the short vowel sound /a/.This activity allows for children to build words that end with -ad, -an, & -ab.

Each page is laminated and you will also receive a laminated page with alphabet letters.

Directions - Build the words on the picture cards first. Explain that some of the words will end with -ad. Sound out each letter as you build the words on the picture cards, for example - /d/ /a/ /d/ or /d/ /ad/ and then blend the sounds together to read the entire word - dad.
After you have practiced building all of the words on the picture cards now you will use the large mats to practice building words by only changing the first letter.
The letters needed to build the words are listed on the slide. For Example - Have your child build the word dad and then ask them to change the word dad to mad by only switching the beginning sounds. Make sure that you are sounding out the letters for each of the words if needed. An answer key is included.
Extension Activity - Have your child write out the words independently as you say the sounds or only show them the pictures and let them write the words on a sheet of paper and then draw a picture to match the words. Allow them to be creative.
