                                           "THE GREY" WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1856                                                      

VINTAGE and probably UNIQUE SURVIVING COLORIZED POSTCARD, mailed from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape Province, to Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A. on 27 May 1924. No stamp. Redirected to Virginia Beach, VA, with Falls Street, Baltimore receiving postmark of 23 June 1924 and killer "1" barred oval. Divided Back.

Manufactured in Britain, and locally published in Port Elizabeth by "H. & CO. P.E." (Hallis & Company, Main Street).

THE SUPERB VIEW: Shows the School campus, with the Boarding House at the middle right, and the Rectory at the far right. The (white) Cricket Pavilion can be seen in front of the Boarding House, looking across the fine, green, Front Field, and the shrubs and young trees on the east side of the property.

THE CONDITION: shows corner and edge wear (see images) which does not detract from this historic view card. 

HISTORY: The school was named for Sir George Grey (1812-1898), a British Colonial Administrator, who was Governor of the Cape Colony from 1854 to 1861. He had previously been appointed Governor of South Australia until 1840, Governor of New Zealand (1840-1854), and later served as Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1877-1879.

The Grey Institute opened in 1856 at a site overlooking the Donkin Reserve, and Algoa Bay. It relocated to its current site in the Mill Park area in 1915. It was then called the Grey High School.
