"THE GREY" WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1856
VINTAGE unused/unwritten Real Photo Post Card (RPPC) by Valentine & Sons Publishing Co. (S.A.) Ltd., P.O. Box 1685 Cape Town.
Very scarce postcard with delightful image of the front of the main school building, inscribed "501948 J.V." at lower right corner. Classic Victorian Architectural design.
THE CONDITION: absolutely exceptional - NO WEAR - Grade 1 - RARE IMAGE.
HISTORY: The school was named for Sir George Grey (1812-1898), a British Colonial Administrator, who was Governor of the Cape Colony from 1854 to 1861. He had also been appointed Governor of South Australia until 1840, Governor of New Zealand (1840-1854), and later served as Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1877-1879.
The Grey Institute opened in 1856 at a site overlooking the Donkin Reserve, and Algoa Bay. It relocated to its current site in the Mill Park area in 1915. It was then called the Grey High School.
