The ship "S.S. Gaelic" was a passenger and cargo liner built for the White Star Line in 1885 by Harland & Wolff of Belfast, Northern Ireland. She was chartered to the Occidental and Oriental Steamship Company and served on its Pacific Ocean crossings from 1885 to 1904. On August 14, 1896, the S.S. Gaelic grounded at Shimonoseki, Japan and had to be towed to Nagasaki for repairs. By January 1897 , the Gaelic was sailing again and carried the passenger who wrote this 3 Sen postcard abroad it.

The Gaelic is historically noted for transporting the first 102 Korean immigrants to the United States, leaving Nagasaki, Japan on December 29, 1902 and arriving with them in Honolulu, Hawaii on 13 January 1903. In 1905, the Gaelic was refitted by Harland & Wolff, then sold to the Pacific Steam Navigation Company and renamed "Callao." She was retired and broken up at Briton Ferry in 1907. Today, Briton Ferry (Welsh: Llansawel) remains as a town and community in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, Wales.
