THIS WEEK: our cover picture represents a contemporary print of the assassination of the monarch which inspired Verdi to write Un Ballo in Maschera. "0 valiant Gustavus, King of

thundering voice commands that no one leave the room. But this barbaric action is discovered by a knife, found by an act of providence." Another searching article by John W.
Freeman indicates that this young composer does not spend all his time in sports cars, as suggested in the New Yorker description of his recent Random House book on that
subject. We offer the first news of opera in Dresden to reach our publication in the last five years. In a new feature, Opera Off the Beat, we will attempt to cover performances
